REHAB FOR POLICE OFFICERS
Police officers – particularly those on patrol – never know when they might be put in a life-threatening situation. A routine traffic stop or burglar alarm check can become deadly in the blink of an eye, leading to a tremendous amount of consistent stress about their personal safety and those around them.
Patrol officers, detectives and police administrators alike also frequently carry the burden of unsolved cases, traumatic events, “survivor’s guilt”, a high workload and other stresses that can lead some police officers to turn to drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism.
ADDICTION AND POLICE OFFICERS:
A PREVALENT PROBLEM
One prominent author in Law Enforcement Today estimated that as many as 25 percent of police officers suffer from alcoholism or substance abuse problems. Though trauma and stress can build up quickly, the most common profile we see in our police officer rehab is an officer with 10 or more years of service.
